After galestorm winds blew my camp at Kitchen Creek apart during the Summer
of 1973, I arranged for a steak house about five miles away to feed my entire
field crew of thirty-five people for dinner. I think the tab for filet minon,
lobster, and crab along with beer and wine cost the State of California about
$2,000. All those people were ecstatic after eating spaghetti, hamburgers, and
hot beer for dinner for over a month (not to mention living in tents,
showering under a cattle tank, and eating outside).
