Hello all,
I was a kid in Detroit during WWII {there were anti-aircraft batteries everywhere .. the
military guarded the factory entrances and the USO was open all day and all night} .. we knew
all the phrases .. "The Whole Nine Yards," being one of them .. So scratch "a 1960's
Americanism!"
Cheese was packaged in wooden {~3" x 3" x 12"} .. 5 lb boxes in those days .. we'd fit legs to
the box .. add a 2 x 2 barrel giving us what passed as a fair 30 cal machine gun. Woman pilots
flew Michael Pfeiffer's B-24 Liberators {built in Ypsilanti, MI.} to New York .. flying over
Detroit .. and we'd play "War" and shoot them down with our cheese boxes!
One day a Japanese "Zero" escorted by some of our own planes flew over Detroit on it's way to a
bond drive in Grand Circus Park. .. Bond Drives were held all the time .. and we'd buy savings
stamps and bonds in school .. as we pledged allegiance to the flag!
