Hi Harry
Over here in sunny Western Australia we run 3 Starlabs which we use as
part of our outreach program (in attempt to cover the 2.5 million square
kilometres we call home). We run laptops and data projectors in all 3 of
our domes and we don't adjust them at all. Our data projectors are all
around the 1000 ansi-lumens mark but we have no trouble at all with
switching between the stars and the images projected onto the 'front'
wall.
We have developed a range of shows using programs such as director and
they are all designed to switch between the star drums and the projected
images at regular intervals. Admittedly the stars don't seem quite as
bright as they would if you had no other light source at all however it
is a reasonably insignificant difference particularly when weighed up
against the groovy things that can be added to the dome program by using
projectors.
Best of luck and happy gazing
