Many thanks for your replies so far.

What I failed to mention in my original message was that the article was
suggesting (or possibly used) eye-tracking software to measure how people
scanned graphic panels as they approached an exhibit, rather than using
observational sessions, surveys or recording conversations. I might check
out human factor journals instead of education and museum-based journals.
