A short addendum to my previous post,

Has anyone found pits associated with Civil War winter
camps, especially ones that were known to have log huts?
Ironically, these would have been very similar to, if not
cruder than, contemporary slave quarters (at least, in VA).
I know of one account of Confederate soldiers building a
semi-dugout and using the clay from the excavation to chink
the logs and chimney aboveground.
