Yesterday I turned the radio on in the middle of Carmina Burana. It
soon became apparent that this was an exceptional performance that really
captured the spirit of the piece. "In the Tavern" sounded earthy, and
the tenor sounded like someone who could start a bar room brawl. The
performance was gutsy and dynamic. I can't speak to the recording
quality, since it was on the radio, and on cheap equipment.

The announcer commented that this recording was an attempt by EMI to
get back into the black. The recording will be available this Tuesday,
January 25th.

For my reference, I have three other recordings of this: the two Telarc
with Atlanta, and Bloomstedt/SFO. The two Atlanta recordings make an
invaluable pair -- both awesome performances and recordings. The first
of the two is historic. I'm pleased that both were engineered by the
same person, Jack Renner.
