Dear Glen,

My wife is from Japan and I am a hobby beekeeper. She always takes my
honey with her as gifts when she goes to Japan, and we have never had
any trouble with it. Just pack it so it will not break. It's also nice
to either wrap the gift or put it in a nice gift bag. Apparently it's
considered to be ill mannered to just hand something unwrapped to
someone as a present.

If you were taking the honey to sell, rather than as gifts, then it
might be a different story. I don't know the restrictions on importing
honey to sell from the U.S. into Japan.

Good luck,

Layne Westover, College Station, Texas

p.s., as a matter of fact, my wife is going back to Japan for a visit
in February and has asked me to prepare some bottles of honey for her to
take as gifts to family and friends. As you probably know, Japanese
people are big on giving gifts.

Can anyone on the list tell me if there are restrictions about the
importing of honey from the US into Japan? I'd like to bring some as
gifts for people there if I visit.

Thanks.
