The diodes concerned with insect tracking are made using the same technology
as microchip manufacture, but they are not 'squark' boxes, just simple
passive components. Their use in conjunction with the design of the aerial
(antenna) involved causes a reflection of an impinging carrier wave at twice
the original frequency. There is no facility for tagging with numbers or any
processing of signals or data.
Having said that... It is quite feasible to create an intelligent chip based
transponder that could be incorporated in a disc very similar in size to a
numbered queen marking disc. This requires a factor of 10 or more increase
in frequency of the radar signal and a considerable increase in sensitivity
of the radar receiver.
Not quite current technology, but not 'too far' into the future!
