Background
Archaeology has been taught in Bristol since the 1960s. In 1996 a full
Department of Archaeology was created, and in 2004 the Social Anthropology
Unit merged with Archaeology to become the Department of Archaeology &
Anthropology.
The Department has a strong track-record in research and teaching in
historical archaeology, reflected in the creation during 2002 of the MA in
Historical Archaeology of the Modern World. A strong body of postgraduate
research in this field ranges from studies of the Long Kesh/Maze site in
Northern Ireland, to the material dimensions of Atlantic history and
British colonialism, and the archaeology of 20th century leisure
landscapes.
Full details of the department’s research and teaching activities in
Britain and overseas can be viewed on the departmental website
