There's a very good collection of clay pipes, and potentially a rich source of info at the Broseley
Pipeworks Musuem at the Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site. (http://www.ironbridge.org.uk/
v_pipe.asp). Many of the English clay pipes were manufactured in and around Broseley until quote
late on into the 20thC. Ayto (as mentioned by Suzanne Carter) is a sort of quick reference guide in
the excellent shire series of publications, but there is also much more detailed work in some of
the British BAR series, and there are a number of these that deal specifically with makers marks
and identification - possibly not quite what you're looking for but might give you a few leads.
Hope this helps!
