The cut bottle issue reminds me of an exhibit I once saw concerning Chinese
opium paraphenalia. The particular site in Tucscon, Arizona yielded beverage
bottle cut-off at the shoulder to make a convenient cone to capture the opium
fumes. Whereas with the bottom of one bottle serving as a jam jar, this function
involved discarding the bottom for the top.

The key to function, I would suppose, it to get as good a handle as possible
on the history of the site.
