Ian,
I have a 1918 Crossley Machine Company catalog that lists the company
as being founded in 1879 and incorporated in 1896. The list themselves as
"Manufacturers of Clay Working Machinery. Pottery, Electric Porcelains,
Tile Making, Clay Washing and Crucible Machinery. Also machinery for
grinding, mixing, washing, and forming clay, flint, spar, plumbago,
refractory substances, and materials of like nature." Main office and
works: Trenton, New Jersey. They illustrate ceramic tile presses and give
the "Domestic Shipping Weight" and the "Export Shipping Weight" The
illustrate "Our Improved No. 6 Screw Press. This machine was designed for
manufacture of large tile blocks, bricks or medium size saggers." It's
weight was 7,000 pounds, export weight 7,400 pounds and stood 11 feet 8
inches high. Other than that, there is not a lot of information on brick
making machinery.
