I have worked at several 19th c sites in Canada's high arctic which had
structures described in the expedition's journals as observatories. Most
of the British Navy Franklin search expeditions conducted scientific
research (1840's, '50's). Sir George Nares (British Navy) had
observatories at both his 1875-6 sites on Ellesmere Island. Lt. Adolphus
Greely's (U.S. Army) "first circumpolar geophysical year" 1881-3 site on
Ellesmere Island was all research, as was the German site on Baffin
Island. As Greely's unfortunate expedition abandoned the site, we
recovered lots of pieces of scientific equipment, some of which we
identified following research at the U.S. National Archives. The reports
on these sites are restricted to protect the sites from further looting,
but I would be happy to share any information if you have specific
questions. I also have a huge electronic bibliography on these arctic
sites. Most of the expeditions published the results of their scientific
research (e.g. A. W. Greely 1888 Report on the Proceedings of the U.S.
Expedition to Lady Franklin Bay, Grinnell Land. Government Printing
Office, Washington, D.C. (2 vols.)

Hello all,

Is anyone out there aware of any historical archaeology that has been
done at sites related to scientific laboratories or astronomical
observatories, either in the US or abroad? I am especially
interested in late 19th or 20th century sites in North America.

I am looking for any references you may have to principal
investigators or publications, as well as any observations,
suggestions, or even guesses you may wish to offer.

Off-line responses can be sent to [log in to unmask], if you so desire.

Thanks and seasons greetings!
