Dear Julie,

I ran a project on a mid-19th to late 20th century schoolhouse in Bermuda. The school was doubly interesting because it had been founded by recently-emancipated men because there was no "colored" school nearby for their children. It continued to serve mainly black children until the mid-20th century integration of Bermuda's schools.

A report of our (very limited) excavation, and examination of the standing structure will be published as

Anna Agbe-Davies, 'Archaeology of the Old Elliot School', Bermuda Journal of Archaeology and Maritime History 13 (2002), pp. 129-154.

And I would second the praise of the article by Beisaw and Gibb in Northeastern Historical Archaeology. I found it _very_ helpful.

hope this is useful to you,

Anna

Subject: Schoolhouse Archaeology

I was wondering if someone could give me some direction on the archaeological
testing of early 20th century schoolhouses. The schoolhouse occupation dates
between 1909 and ca. 1945 and is located in rural Oregon in the Willamette
Valley. The building was moved to another location in 1986. At this time the
ground is covered in vinca and surrounded by mature oaks. According to oral
informants, a privy stood in the back, a well was on the property, and a play
structure was 30 feet from the edge of the schoolhouse.

I am aware of a project that the Delaware Dept. of Transportation conducted as
well as a project in Jessamine County, Kentucky. Has anyone else had
experience excavating schoolhouse sites and/or could you provide me with any
references?

In addition to responding to this post could you also cc a response to me at

Thank you very much!
