There is a 17th century structure from Jamestown described by Noel hume as a
semi-permanent clamp base with a photo fig. 28 in his Historical
Archaeology. I presume it is somewhere in the Jamestown monograph but my
copy is buried under a stack of books and my rheumatism is playing up with
this dam British weather. Can give you lots of refs for clamps which were
still used in Oxfordshire for mass production into the 19th century but that
is probably not what you are after Last week a part of a possible brick kiln
turned up in Leicester shown as being an area of brick making on a 1744 map
but not enough to sort out what was going on so I would be interested in
kiln paraallels myself.

Subject: Brickmaking
We have just encountered what is probably a brickmaking oven from ca 1700.
Would anyone have any references to this type of structure from that time
period? Thanks in advance.
