Of course I've heard music on the radio many many times that made me
stop to find out who/what it was, but for me the most memorable experiences
of this kind was back in the mid-60s. I was on the way to a chess club
when I encountered (on WFMT, Chicago) the most agonized dissonant symphonic
and vocal work I'd ever heard. My hair stood on end. I was riveted and
had to listen to the end. It was "Passion According to St. Luke" by
Penderecki, and probably the first time I'd ever heard of that composer.
I acquired the piece as soon as I was able.
