Interesting: the headline in today's FT print edition is the above, but
on-line, it's "Peter and the Wolf." Go, figure. The interview itself
is worth reading: http://tinyurl.com/2zlal.
If you don't read the whole article, here's a bit not to be missed:
He is on record as not being over-keen on Frank Gehry's design
to encase the centre indoors, underneath a vast dome. What
was wrong with it? "I hated the dome from the moment I saw
it. No, I hated the idea - I didn't even see it. The reason
is: the one thing we don't have in New York City is sky. We
have skyscrapers, but you can't see anything. The one thing
we need to protect is this open feeling in the Lincoln Center.
It is a little haven. If you are going to dome it all over
and make it into an interior space, like a big mall, it is
ridiculous. Of course Frank Gehry said to me: 'You know Joe,
I have been to the Met three times and every time I come, it
is raining. So you've got to have some coverage there.' So
I said, 'Frank, I suggest you don't come to the Met.'"
