Given the subjectivity of personal taste in music, I am surprised that
anyone who dislikes the music of a generally considered great composer
would be wondering why. I don't care for the music of Mendelssohn or
Vivaldi; the reason is that their music doesn't touch me in the slightest.
Although I can and do say to myself that their music stinks, I realize
that the great number of fans each of them has must me due to something
I can't hear or reach in the past and present. The future might yield
different results.
Concerning Ravel, I think of him as one of the best composers of the
20th century and would do so even if he had only composed "Gaspard" and
the String Quartet.
