I have an off-the-air recording of Barshai's completion and, in my usual
non-commital manner, can say it is without a doubt my least favorite of
the performing versions of the tenth.

Odd scoring choices, including instruments for which Mahler never wrote,
make this very bizarre-sounding indeed. If Barshai was making a performing
version of the Shostakovich 16th, this would be perfect. For the Mahler,
it is just lousy.

The interpretation is so-so.
