The opera singer Dmitri Hvorostovsky had a similiar experience at Tower.
When I walked in, he was arguing with the manager of the department,
who told him to get out and never come back again. Turns out, Dmitri
was looking for a specific cabaletta by a specific singer. The clerk
told him a certain version had the cabaletta, and he bought it. Turns
out, it didn't have the cabaletta. Dmitri told the manager that of all
the places in NY, the Tower Records should be the one to have knowledgeable
clerks-within a mile radius are Mannes School, the Juilliard School,
the Met Opera, City Opera, NY Philharmonic, Carnegie Hall, etc etc etc.
Musicians of various sorts come in with specific needs, and the clerks
therefore needed to be knowledgeable. He suggested that they hire
students or retirees who would more easily work for the low wages that
sort of job commands. The manager's response? "Get out and don't come
back".
BTW, the classical staff at the lower Broadway branch at 4th street are
quite knowledgeable, and pleasant, as well.
