Speaking of tunnels, Christopher Murphy's note reminds me of the
"well known" (but completely unsubstantiated) tunnels under the Santa Fe
(NM) plaza.  The tunnels are said to have been constructed by Otermin as an
escape route out of the villa in August of 1680 during the Pueblo Revolt.
Locals are convinced of the existence of these "tunnels" as evidenced by
converted exterior stairways (now covered) to basement apartments and
storage facilities in buildings around the plaza.  Other "tunnels" are said
to exist from buildings blocks away from the plaza, all of which end up at
the Palace of the Governors.  Archaeologists and historians who refute the
tunnels are frequently referred to as "crack pots" by those in the know.
