With a grant from the Aaron Copland Fund, San Francisco's Other Minds
is preparing a Berlin production and subsequent recording of John Cage
ragas. Yep, ragas, as in Hindu classical music. Little-known until
now, one of Cage's Song Books consists of 18-scale patterns, or ragas,
comprising "Solo for Voice 58." The vocalist on the Other Minds production
and CD will be Amelia Cuni, a classically trained Indian singer, who
also is active in contemporary avant-garde music. She will collaborate
with percussionist Federico Sanesi and electronic composer Werner Durand,
preparing for the premiere at the MerzMusik Festival in Berlin. (Reminder:
"Music from Other Minds," with Richard Friedman, is heard every Friday
night, beginning at 11, on KALW-FM, 91.7, and www.kalw.org.)
