Anna asked about using a shallow frame in a deep to create drone cells.
Sure, it is almost certain to work. But why bother? It will be very hard
to handle and freeze without having it collapse. Dadant and Betterbee both
sell drone foundation that will fit in a deep frame just fine. Then you
have the wood to protect it.
As Allen said, producing drones will reduce honey consumption. But for
hobbyists...so what? Calderone is about to publish a paper pointing out how
extremely effective freezing drone brood is when it is part of an IPM
program.
