I have several questions regarding wine bottle glass and its frequency on
historic sites. The ratio of wine bottle glass on an historic military site
has been known to be higher then at civilian sites. Does this hold true at
all military sites? Does this mean that there is a greater availablity of
bottles of wine than of barrels of wine? Wouldn't barrles be easier to
transport than would bottles? How would transportation of the wine be taken
care of? Would it initially be in barrles or by the bottle? Was it a
common practice to refill bottles from barrles? If so, one would expect to
find a large number of barrel parts on sites. Would one be able to tell
what the barrel was used for from remains left?
Does anyone know of any reports that deal with any of these questions? If
anyone has any information that would be helpful please pass it along. I am
most interested in military sites in Florida and the southeast but all
information is appreciated. Thank you in advance for any help rendered.
