Due to a planning error, the SHA's Academic and Professional Training
Committee has revised the program offering. The African-American
Cross-Cultural Discussion will no longer be a workshop at the meeting. The
discussion group will meet at the time and place scheduled in St. Louis, but
there will be no fee asked of participants. The abstract is below. Any
inquiries can be directed to me at the email and phone number at the end of
this message.

At this time I do not think you will need to pre-register for the session.

Sorry for the confusion,
Tim Scarlett, Chair
Academic and Professional Training Committee
Society for Historical Archaeology

The session abstract:
African-American Cross Cultural Workshop:
"Charms and Conjuration: Getting Beyond 'Africanisms' and Superstitions"

Presenters/Sponsors: The African-American Archaeology Network
Time: 1:30-5:30

This workshop is a revival of the African-American Cross-Cultural Workshop,
a staple at SHA meetings until 1996. We will provide an informal atmosphere
where researchers currently involved in the archaeology of the African
Diaspora can exchange information and ideas about current excavations and
ongoing research. This year's theme will involve the growing number of
objects identified as "Charms" in the archaeological literature and how to
interpret them within the complex, hybrid belief systems of which they are a
part. Notice: The first portion of the workshop will be devoted to the
future of the African-American Archaeology Network. All researchers
currently involved in African Diaspora studies are encouraged to attend and
we need your input!

rectifies the past. Atrocity merely arms the future for more atrocity."
