Well, people in social science are always finding ways to sound scientific.
One example would be the field hands who write "Krotavina" for gopher hole
in their field notes. The word that really sets my hackles up is "mitigate"
in lieu of salvage or excavation or some even better program. California
consultants often write recommendations to clients "the site can be
mitigated" or they can "mitigate the site with a 0.5% sample." Of course,
the site is neutral and archaeology field work and report is but one
mitigation alternative. It is the proposed earth disturbing project that is
legally compelled to develop a program "to mitigate adverse effects to
below a level of significance." I always found it odd working in government
to hear archaeologists argue for miniscule excavation when project redesign
could preserve 100% of a site. And there you have it once again, people
finding ways to sound scientific with terms like Krotavina or mitigate and
percentage sample.
