The three links below are photos of a small (2cm x 3cm) ivory artifact
recovered from a subfloor pit in an antebellum slave quarter at Poplar
Forest in Virginia. The “foot” is grooved and bored to a depth of
approximately 1/2cm. The opposite end is also bored and shows rust where
an iron shaft once sat. We suspect, based on the recovery of a large
number of pins and buttons from this context, that the object is sewing-
related, perhaps a clamp? Part of a second identical object was recovered
nearby. Any identification help would be greatly appreciated.
