Subject: newport medieval ship under new threat
The CBA is extremely concerned about a further crisis relating to the
Newport Ship, which at the same time could threaten the closure of Glamorgan
Gwent Archaeological Trust.
The emergence of a contractual dispute between Newport City Council and the
Trust, who were the authority's archaeological contractor for the project,
has we understand resulted in the Council suspending payments to the Trust
for the project. As a consequence the Trust has had to suspend all
post-excavation work on the Ship and the financial knock-on effect of the
dispute to GGAT is of a scale which could place its future existence at
stake.
The CBA has written to Newport City Council and Sue Essex, Minister for the
Environment at the Welsh Assembly to draw attention to our concerns both for
the future of the Ship and of Glamorgan Gwent Archaeological Trust
The Friends of the Newport Ship group has launched another letter writing
campaign to local councillors, Assembly Members and Ministers, and MPs to
draw attention to the sorry state of affairs - you can find further details
about how you can get involved in this online at:
