I am not sure about "heimat" for "Homeland" but perhaps "heimlich" is
closer, though you might have to use "unheimlich" perhaps to be understood.
I don't know German, but Sigmund Freud wrote about the "uncanny" or
"unheimlich" or that scary feeling one might get reading a book late at
night. Perhaps it too is not translated directly (uncanny) however it seems
to be connected to the idea of "Homeland Security". I used to wear a blue
nylon "jumper" which had the idea of "Gym Security" on it until evaluated by
the Reagan Administration to be an inefficient use of funds, i.e. Work
Study, as it creeped into the University by creating minority positions to
do "efficiency studies" of Federal funded programs. Perhaps the preferred
"Affirmative Action" of the present administration.
