I'm sure enjoying the Schubert string quartet cycle on Naxos. The
Kodaly Quartet, which also did the 20-some-disc Hayden set for Naxos,
is in similarly good form here. I've got the first four discs of what
will probably be a six-disc set, and the fifth one was reviewed favorably
in the BBC Music Magazine not long ago. The Schubert quartets, even the
early ones, are always interesting, frequently compelling, packed with
incident, and not a little menacing.
I first got interested in the Schubert quartets when I saw the Woodie
Allen movie, Crimes and Misdemeanors. Schubert's String Quartet No.
15 was the backdrop for a couple of climactic moments, and I've been
attracted to the piece ever since. No. 15 is on one of the Naxos
discs I don't have yet, so I am eagerly awaiting its arrival.
