Slavery and Emancipation: The Birth of the Caribbean
Conference in Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Islands, British West indies
October 25-28th 2004
Prelimianry Announcement
The Turks and Caicos National Museum will be hosting a conference as part of
its events for The United Nations General Assembly's International Year to
Commemorate the Struggle against Slavery its Abolition. There will be three
days of papers and one of tours. The three days are:
Day 1 - Slave History of the Bahamian Archipelago
(which will include Bermuda, The Carolinas and associations with other
Caribbean Countries)
Day 2 - Presentation of Slave History
(to include how publishers, documentary makers, museums and historic houses
represent slave heritage)
Day 3 - Recent Research in the Caribbean
The Museum and associates will also prepare several papers on the latest
news in the search for the Slave Ship Trouvadore which sank in the Islands
in 1841.
Information about the venue, accomodation and final plans for the conference
