Memorable more for the reaction than for the thing
itself:
At a dig in Southwark (south London) in the summer of
1998, the directors were interested in finding Roman
features. Very early on, (the first day of trowelling
after the backhoes had left), I skimmed the surface
and up popped a Roman coin. One of the staff said,
"Right then--Well done--You can go now!"
