Jan Anton Brouwer:
>Now my question. Last week I joined a concert by the Concertgebouw
>Orchestra. They played Ives Orchestral set no. 1 (Three places in New
>England). It's a wonderful piece, which I never heard before. You can
>imagine I want to buy a recording of it. I know MTT recorded it with
>the San Francisco. Do list members know this recording? Is it good or
>do you know other, better cd's?
Welcome back. There are many good recordings of this work. MTT is good,
Dohnanyi with the Cleveland is, I think, better, but not significantly
so. MTT made another recording early in his career with the Boston,
also very good. I think the couplings should enter into a decision.
MTT (BSO): Symphony No. 4; Central Park in the Dark (both with Ozawa)
MTT (BSO): Ruggles: Sun-treader; Piston: Symphony No. 2
MTT (SFSO): From the Steeples and Mountains; The Things Our Fathers Loved;
The Pond; Memories; Charlie Rutlage; The Circus Band; In Flanders Field;
They are There!; Tom Sails Away; Symphony No. 4, 3rd mvmt; Psalm 100;
Serenity; General William Booth Enters into Heaven; The Unanswered Question
Dohnanyi (Cleveland): Orchestral Set No. 2; Ruggles: Sun-treader; Men and
Mountains; Seeger: Andante for Strings
