The current location of the Palace of the Legion of Honor or as some
would say Dishonor was originally a cemetery dating from the mid 1850s
to about 1910. A group was hired to move all of the bodies to Coloma
(the City that houses most of SF's cemeteries), they simply knocked the
gravestones over the cliff into the ocean and left everyone behind.
When the Legion was built within five years of the cemetery's closure,
parts of coffins were cut in half to build this monument to one rich
woman--Mrs. Spreckles. This all became clear when the building was
extensively remolded for earthquakes and just age-related updates. So
this probably isn't a good comparison.
