Cemeteries are not often respected, as we often find across the Nation. The
early Protestant cemetery in San Diego, California was called Pioneer Cemetery
by early 20th century residents. It is up on a hill in one of the wealthiest
neighborhoods. About thirty years ago, some of those bluebloods decided they
did not want their children playing around tombstones and got the City Council
to have the stones removed. Ray Brandes, Dean of History, University of San
Diego decided who was important to him and set aside those stones to be set in
the wall...the rest he allowed the city to toss.
