George B. Cortelyou, CEO ConEdison, NYC shorthand teacher, four cabinet posts under Presidents McKinley and Roosevelt, (Postmaster General, etc.), "first White House Press Secretary," according to the U.S. National Archives, his house in Washington, D.C. was in a recent "Victorian Homes" issue, also once Chairman of the Republican Party, important resident (as was singer songwriter artist Harry Chapin) of Huntngton, Long Island, New York, educated in Massachusetts, descendant of the first surveyor of Brooklyn, Jacques Cortelyou for the Dutch West Indies Company, a street in Brooklyn is named after the family, and other interesting information. Recently historians have remarked that his papers should be researched as a very important period in America occurred, the Spanish American War, and the research has not been done. Perhaps its all in shorthand!
I came across a drawer I think kept in the National Archives of his personal affects while in office. Does anyone know where to look for those things, and are they available on line? Does anyone have any other information about him? Apparently I have a great aunt somehow associated, perhaps his second wife?
