Ken Feder's "Lessons from the Past: An Introductory Reader in Archaeology"
(McGraw Hill 1998) does exactly that. Ken includes an "I am archaeologist"
page between several chapters where our colleagues describe why they chose
to become a professional archaeologist & their excitement about their career
paths - includes academic, crm, federal & state archaeologists. Interesting
insights for the general public about archaeology & archaeologists.

Why make stuff up? Just make what you have exciting -
If it wasn't such a thrill, or if we didn't think it was important, why else
would we be out there in all weather, getting paid peanuts, and just
basically putting up with all that crap...?
