Michigan Tech still has a small number of slots for our excavation at the
West Point Foundry site, May 19 through June 26 The West Point Foundry
operated in the town on Cold Spring nestled on the Hudson River just north
of New York City. This is the second year of Michigan Tech's long term
research program at this internationally significant industrial site, owned
and managed by the Scenic Hudson Land Trust.

The WPF operated throughout much of the nineteenth century as a leading
manufactory of iron products, including cannons and munitions, steam
engines, locomotives, machinery, and domestic products.

The 2003 field team will complete the total station mapping project and
begin excavations in selected areas of the site, including both industrial
and domestic components. We anticipate excavations at the cannon boring
mill, the furnace, and the 1865 office building. The data collection will
be supplemented with various lectures, discussions, and field trips.

Direct questions off-list to Tim Scarlett at [log in to unmask] or by
telephone at 906-487-2113. The project provides dormitory housing in nearby
Newburgh, NY. Excavations continue Monday through Friday during the
project's duration. Further information and photographs of the 2002 field
season at:

Note that the second field program listed on the web page, the Nonesuch
Copper Mine survey, was canceled due to funding shortfalls.
