During the summer of 2002, Michigan Technological University faculty will
undertake two field schools in Industrial Archaeology, six weeks each. Both
field schools will be conducted by Patrick Martin and Timothy Scarlett.
Carp River Forge site, Negaunee, Michigan (May 20 - June 27).
West Point Foundry, Cold Spring, New York (July 1 - August 8).
The first track (May 20-June 27) will be run in Negaunee, Michigan, at the
site of the Carp River Forge. The Forge sits on the grounds of the Michigan
Iron Industry Museum. The Carp River Forge was established by the Jackson
Mining Company in the 1840s, and was the first attempt at producing iron
from the newly-discovered ore bodies near Teal Lake. The forge operated for
about ten years, before being replaced by blast furnaces elsewhere. The
field season will include at least one field trip to other archaeological
and historical sites on Michigan's beautiful Upper Peninsula.
During the second track (July 1- August 8), MTU plans to conduct a mapping
and testing project at the West Point Foundry in Cold Spring, New York.
Located up the Hudson River from New York City, this site was a very
important industrial complex, and produced weapons and munitions for the
United States during a number of conflicts during the nineteenth and
twentieth century. We expect this site will become the focus of several
seasons of work for MTU. The survey element of this year's work will
include both graduate and undergraduate students, using EDM for GIS and some
excavations to delineate the critical features of this 80 acre wooded site.
We will also conduct survey in more remote areas of the park. The field
school may also have an archive-based, public history component as well. It
will also involve at least one field trip.
