Greetings. Someone enquired as to other recent Beethoven piano sonata
cycles... personally, I have greatly enjoyed Stephen Kovacevich's new
set on EMI. Very individual, passionate performances -- he's very good
at bringing out aspects of the sonatas that I haven't heard in previous
recordings.
If you can still manage to find it, I'd also recommend the super-cheap
cycle by Bernard Roberts on Nimbus. I think I literally paid about 20
bucks for the set (10 or 11 discs), and while it won't replace any of
my all-time favorite B sonata recordings (Kovacevich & Richard Goode for
complete sets, and then there's Rudolf Serkin, Emil Gilels...), it's
still first-rate, digitally recorded, and well worth the modest investment.
Regards,
Bill Hill
