Enthusiasm for Braga Santos is heartily understood! He's fast gathering
a cult. Most of his output can be obtained from the Portuguese label
Strauss/Portugalsom: quality of performances are also good, especially
when performed by Portuguese musicians who know the work well, which
usually makes a difference. Their version of Braga Santos Symphony No
2 is by the Hungarian State Orchestra under Nemeth, but this orchestra
seems to have some link with Portugalsom and records a lot for them.
Symphony No 3 is London SO with a Portuguese composer/conductor.
Currently some 15 different works by Braga Santos are in stock.

This wonderful little label carries a huge range, from the medieval to
baroque composers like Seixas and romantics like Bomtempo, through to
the contemporary. The music scene there is fairly active so there are a
number of composers worth exploring. This label also offers authentic
folkloric material and historic recordings by well known Portuguese
conductors and soloists. It's a label run by dedicated enthusiasts who
love and understand the music, so it's well worth supporting! To get

They have a website www.strauss.pt which is not very proactive but they
are extremely helpful "in real" if you email or phone (351 21 711 2710)
(fax 351 21 714 1723) Prices are not high, at least not in Europe, and
friends in the US who've ordered from them say the service is efficient
and not prohibitively expensive. Their products are always in stock in
Portuguese bookshops eg Livraria Portuguesa but anyone knowing these
shops will know anyway. They also sell scores. This is music to immerse
in, it's different. Most of the composers lived and worked abroad,
mainly in France and Germany, but seem to have the uniqueness of their
background. If you like Braga Santos you might also like to check out
Luis de Freitas Branco, Vianna da Motta, Fernando Lopes Graca.
