Or how about infestation with parasitic fly larvae ('apimiasis')? This
is known to occur with a variety of fly species (most notably Senotania
tricuspis).
I haven't any first hand experience of this here in the UK, but I
believe that it is comparatively common in some warmer parts of the
world.
