I have a Quintessence cassette of Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue and Concerto
in F. The quote from some reviewer on the cover says Lewenthal, but the
microscopic print on what appears to be a tiny version of a record cover
says Jerome Lowenthal.

Probably it's Jerome. Anyone else who has this cassette?

The Elan CD 82276 of Alkan, Liszt is the same music as the RCA HP 63310
with Alkan, Liszt Piano Music. The HP technology aparrently resulted
in better sound according to one source I read. Anyway, the CD sounds
fantastic and cost about half of what the Elan one went for.

I paid a small fortune for an LP of that music years ago and all I could
find was mono. On the CD, I believe that I can detect several splices
in Lewenthal's Quasi Faust by Alkan, but otherwise it is stunning. There
was an LP (in stereo, I believe) that included the Hexameron by Liszt
as well as his Norma Fantasy. Hex made it to CD, but Norma didn't.
Lewenthal's Norma was reviewed as the best recording ever made of this
piece. I consider it to be one of Liszt's greatest works and maybe one
of the greatest piano pieces I have ever heard.
