Jim Tobin asked for recommendations of CDs of Sallinen's music.
My favourite is BIS CD-41 which contains his first and third symphonies,
Chorali (for orchestra), a work for solo violin and one for solo cello,
and a string quartet. Another BIS, CD-511 has his Sunrise Serenade and
his second and sixth symphonies, the second essentially a percussion
concerto. The sixth was commissioned by the New Zealand Symphony and is
directly inspired by that country, but is not, for me, as successful as
his earlier works in this form.
There is also a well-filled 2-CD set in Finlandia's budget-priced Meet
the Composer series (4509-99966-2). The main works are the 4th and 5th
symphonies, and the cello concerto. I'm not sure about the availability
of this label. Failing this, there's an attractive CD on Naxos of his
works for strings which contains some of the material in the Finlandia
set.
