There is a famous black & white film produced in the mid-1960s titled, "The
Loved One" in which the comedian Jonathan Winters plays a dual role as "The
Blessed Reverend" in a posh Beverly Hills type of cemetery and also as a hick
manager of a pet cemetery. His most irreverent line in the movie is when he just
returned from a meeting with realtors who offered a ton of money for the
cemetery as a potential housing site, so he announces to his board of directors,
"We gotta get rid of these stiffs!" The movie is a shocking expose' and critique
of the mortuary industry and the prime reason my parents elected to be
cremated. After reading all the posts here in HISTARCH concerning the long-term fate
of cemeteries and their residents, I am inclined to think of Jonathan Winters
and his sudden desire to get rich by selling off the plots to real estate
speculators.
