Frozen Charlotte dolls began, as I understand it, in the 1840s German
principalities.

List Folks - I had heard that the name Frozen Charlotte could be traced
back to a ballad/poem written circa 1840. The text is said to be based on
actual event wherein a young woman froze to death on her way to a dance
after having left her coat behind rather than cover a beautiful dress.
There are apparently different versions of the ballad/poem, but the object
lesson is basically the same -- don't be vain. The dolls thus came to be
physical reminders of a real or at least believed in event and were used
as objects to send a message of how one should act....
"No. no, no fair Charlotte said,
And she laughed like a gypsy queen
To ride in blankets muffled up,
I never can be seen.
So off they go, Charlotte wearing
only a silken cloak.....
......[it ends}
Fair Charlotte was a stiffened corpse
And word spoke nevermore
Now ladies when you hear of this
Think of that dreadful night
And never venture out thinly clad,
On such a winter's night."
All of the above comes from a paper researched by a student, Rebecca
Griffin. It was written a good while ago, but if you're deeply interested
contact me off-list and I'll send you a copy. And everyone -- please
wear your coat....

Pardon my ignorance, but could someone please clue me in to why they're
called "frozen charlotte" dolls?
