I only know of this from publications, but
the excavations at Avalon Colony in Newfoundland turned up a seal
impression of a weeping eye and a heart pierced by three arrows from a
17th century context. I think it was identified as an
Immaculate Heart of Mary (in Tuck in Old and New Worlds, 1999), but I
think it may be a Sacred Heart image due to the time period.
The heart of Mary did not become an important symbol till later.
I am very interested in early religious artifacts too, so would love to
know when you have a picture available.
Sincerely,
Christa
