Stephen,
One interesting work of historical fiction is "Panther in the Sky" by James Alexander Thom. It is an account of the life of Tecumseh and the US frontier in the late 18th/early 19th centuries.
A very interesting non-fiction narrative that I have used in classes is "Night Flying Woman: An Ojibway Narrative" by Ignatia Broker. This presents the narrative of an Ojibway woman from her childhood living in northern Wisconsin/Minnesota through her family's forced placement on a reservation etc.
