Not the Tippett recalled personally to me by friends of his, who was
charming, articulate, fascinating and unfailing interested in everything
and everyone around him. Public talks on new works by nervous composers
in a foreign language can certainly give very false impressions!

The last movement of the 3rd Symphony has a *soprano* soloist singing a
sequence of *blues-based* numbers (and wonderful it is, too). His only
use of spirituals was in "Child of Our Time", where there is certainly a
marvellously uplifting interweaving of the solo soprano and tenor with
the chorus in "Oh bye and bye ... I'm gonna lay down my heavy load".
