FYI, Joel will not allow a review of our recent Alan Hovhaness CD in
Fanfare, unless we purchase advertising ...

Yes, Fanfare reviews are very well written! But, you are missing many
reviews of small label stuff because most small labels can not afford to
pay Fanfare to have CDs reviewed. So, as a reader, you are not getting the
whole picture.
I've not encountered the above problem with The Wire, American Record
Guide, Gramohpone, The Strad, and other publications. So, Joel's "pay
for reviews" policy seems a little unfair, from the perspective of the
fledgling independent label.
If you want to see a fairer/wider coverage, ClassicalNet, MusicWeb and
other online review publications are paving the way to full and equal
coverage of all releases, regardless of the buying power of the big name
labels.
Thanks to classical music groups like these, the internet can become a
beacon of truth and fairness.
Again, the reviews that do appear in Fanfare are well written. Just be
aware that the record companies generally must pay to have their CDs
reviewed by Fanfare.
Best,
